Welcome to Ballyholme Yacht Club
Ballyholme Yacht Club (BYC) look forward to welcoming you to our club and Bangor, County Down – a Victorian seaside resort just 30 minutes from Belfast. We love to welcome international competitions to Bangor – having hosted the Topper World Championships in 2016 and the F18 World Championships in 2014.
2019 is our centenary when we celebrate 100 years of sailing as Ballyholme Yacht Club.
We hope that you enjoy your stay as much as Glenn Ashby did (winning skipper of the Americas Cup with Team New Zealand in Bermuda 2017).
Racing Lasers at BYC
We are lucky to be situated in a sheltered sandy bay on the south-east shore of Belfast Lough with 40 square kilometers of open water to run sailing championships with little tide and relatively shallow water – our championship race area is a quick 15 minute sail from our club.
Lasers have been sailed at BYC from the early 1970’s – we hosted one of the first European Championships in 1979 as well as the Laser Radial Europeans in 2004.
We have had representatives at all of the Olympic Games since 1984 with James Espey sailing in the Laser at London 2012 and qualifying Ireland for Rio 2016. Many Olympic Laser sailors have trained at Ballyholme including 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist Tom Slingsby and Phillip Buhl from Germany.
